Verruca Treatment

Verrucae are small viral infections that develop on the soles of the feet and can sometimes become painful when walking or standing.

 

While many verrucae disappear naturally over time, treatment can help reduce discomfort, encourage resolution and prevent them from spreading.

During your appointment, your podiatrist will assess the verruca, discuss any symptoms you are experiencing and recommend the most appropriate treatment for your individual circumstances. Treatment options may include:

 

Verrutop. This is a relatively new treatment option. After debridement a liquid is applied to the lesion. It works by breaking down the viral protein structure of the wart and denaturing it, leading to a natural
shedding of the affected skin. Clinical trials show a success rate of up to 80% within 6 treatments. This is suitable for adults and children over 6 years.

Salicylic acid is a caustic, a paste is applied to the skin and it causes a chemical burn and the skin peels away in layers, this removes the wart over time. The acid also irritates the wart area, encouraging
the immune system to respond to the virus. Salicylic acid has around a 60% success rate of resolving verrucae. As it is painless this is suitable for even young children.

We have recently invested in the latest technology in verruca treatments. Swift uses microwave energy to treat the effected tissue. As it does not break the skin there is no need for a dressing. There is no pain after treatment and on average the verrucae resolve after just 3 treatments.

 

This treatment can cause a quick sharp discomfort for a few seconds during application, so we don’t recommend for young
children. It has a 80-90% resolution rate and you can find out more about swift here
